Mr. Batignole

In occupied Paris in 1942, mean-spirited butcher Edmond Batignole causes the arrest of Doctor Max Bernstein, who was on the point of fleeing with his family. A little later, through his future son-in-law’s contacts, Edmond moves into Dr. Bernstein’s huge apartment, and he becomes the SS’s appointed caterer. But one day, when he answers the door, he comes face to face with Simon Bernstein, the doctor’s youngest son. Having escaped, the boy is searching for his family. Reluctantly, Edmond agrees to hide the boy. But soon, Simon is joined by two young cousins. Slowly sensitized to the tragic fate of the Jews, Edmond decides to save the three children by smuggling them to the Swiss border.
