Moscow, or "Moscou" in Flemish, is a densely populated working class neighborhood on the outskirts of Ghent, Belgium.

Matty, 41, the mother of three, bumps into a truck with her car in a supermarket parking lot. Johnny, 29, climbs down from the cab. He is infuriated by the dent in his front bumper and yells at Matty. She yells back, and eventually, the police have to intervene.

Back in her apartment, Matty takes a hot bath to recover from the afternoon's emotions when her 17-year-old daughter Vera answers the phone and passes it to her. It's Johnny, apologizing for his behavior. Matty tells him to stay out of her life.

A few days later, Johnny rings the doorbell. He wants to fix the dent in the trunk of Matty's car. Matty's children witness the first sparks between Matty and the so-much-younger Johnny.

Matty's estranged husband Werner is jealous. A teacher, he left her more than five months ago for a co-ed, but keeps postponing the official divorce. Meanwhile, Matty agrees to meet Johnny for drinks, "just this once." He is charming and very gallant and she finds she has feelings for him.

Later that week, Werner tells Matty that Johnny has a criminal record; he beat up his former wife only 18 months ago. Matty is shaken by the news and doesn't know what to do. She has an even bigger decision to make when Werner tells her that he's thinking about coming back home.
