Marius

Marius, whose father Caesar owns a waterfront bar called Bar de la Marine located at the old port of Marseille, is haunted by a desire to go to sea. The young man is secretly in love with Fanny, the daughter of Honorine, a fruit vendor at the market. When a widower named Panisse expresses a desire to marry Fanny, it gives Marius the strength to confess his feelings to the young woman. He’s surprised to find the feelings are reciprocated, and they sleep together.

When he reveals to her that he wants to travel the world by sea, Fanny tells him that being the wife of a sailor is not the life she wants. However, their parents have discovered that the two have had intimate relations and they convince Marius to ask Fanny to marry him. He does, but when Fanny realizes he’s not happy staying with her instead of going to see, she encourages him to go.
