La Riviere Gentille

Revered video portraitist Brigitte Cornand crafts this documentary profile of prolific artist and sculptor Louise Bourgeois. In order to offer a more intimate portrait of her subject, Cornand moved to New York and spent an extended amount of time in the artist's Chelsea home. The result is a film that not only highlights how Bourgeois' living abode has nearly become a work of art in itself, but also how she has retreated from all but a small collection of memory threads tied carefully to her time spent in the studio. It's title borrowed from a poem penned by Bourgeois in the 1950s, La Rivière Gentille interweaves images of the artist at work with pages from her acclaimed red diary books and the mesmerizing onomatopoeia that she sings to herself while drawing.
