It's Hard Being Loved by Jerks

In Amsterdam in 2004, director Theo van Gogh, who'd filmed a provocative short film exposing the state of Muslim women, was assassinated by a fundamentalist Muslim man. In reaction, in 2005 the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published 12 caricatures of the prophet Muhammed, which drew strong reactions in Arab-Muslim world.

In a show of solidarity, the weekly French satiric Charlie Hebdo published the cartoons as well, along with a drawing showing Muhammed saying: "It's hard to be loved by idiots." Outraged, by the Great Mosque of Paris, the World Muslim League and the Union of Islamic Organizations of France filed a lawsuit against Charlie Hebdo and its editor, Phillip Val.
