Goshogaoka

Los Angeles still photographer Sharon Lockhart made her feature film directorial debut with this stylized, medium-length (63 minutes) documentary about a Japanese girls' basketball team. Minus interviews or subtitles, Lockhart's approach is more akin to performance art, capturing conformity and choreography as the Goshogaoka gym girls are seen in routine practice drills and near-abstract aerobic activities. Shot in 16mm, the film was shown at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival.
